Your quick guide to sensitive skin

Dryness, burning, breaking out or redness. So many skin concerns and sensitivities out there and so many aggravating factors! We all deal with little sensitivities from time-to-time – some more severe or more often than others – which is why it is so important to get to know the basics of skin sensitivity. Knowing causes, things to avoid and things to look for means we can treat and look after our skin like it truly deserves!

Keep an eye on those beauty products

Perhaps one of the biggest irritants to skin is using the wrong beauty products. Artificial fragrances, alcohol-based products and rough facial scrubs are all known to inflame and dry out sensitive skin-types. Products with less ingredients and the kind of ingredients you’ll also find in your food are the best ones to look out for. Making sure you patch-test products before using them all-over is also key to discovering which products work for you individually – as we all react differently to different ingredients!

Overall, you should be making sure your beauty routine is full of beauty products that love your skin as much as you do. MineTan and b.tan are two brands with PETA-approved, skin-loving ingredients in all of their products to give your skin a golden glow (rather than a red glow…)!

You are what you eat

This old saying can be quite true when it comes to skin sensitivity! While allergic reactions to food will often result in inflamed and irritated skin, even diets high in processed or refined carbohydrates and unhealthy fats can lead to some skin concerns depending on your level of sensitivity. Keeping an eye on foods with additives, salty foods, high sugar content, junk food and spicy food can help manage skin concerns as these can trigger inflammation and in some cases lead to premature ageing. Ensuring you always drink plenty of water and keeping an eye on how your skin reacts to certain foods can assist in managing your own sensitivities! While, of course, a healthy diet full of fruit, veggies, omega 3 fatty acids, beans, nuts and whole grains can ensure your skin has all it needs to protect itself.

Prepping your skin for the environment

From allergic reactions to mother nature just doing her thang, your skin can become irritated due to a whole variety of factors. Temperature and weather extremes and irritants and allergens in the air can cause skin to dry out, become itchy or worsen existing conditions. Making sure you cover up in heat and taking protective measures during extreme cold weather or winds are all simple ways you can ensure you’re giving your skin some TLC when nature seems to be against it.

Overall, paying attention to what your insides and outsides are consuming and dealing with is key to keeping that skin of yours happy!
