The Dos and Don’ts of Creating Your Own Instagram Hashtag

If you’re trying to promote your beauty or tanning business on Instagram, coming up with the perfect hashtag can be a great way to promote your brand and get your followers excited. Here are the dos and don’ts of creating your own unique Instagram hashtag.

DON’T: Steal Another Company’s Hashtag

We know it’s temping. A similar company comes up with a sick hashtag, it hasn’t brought them much success, and it seems perfectly innocent to start using it as your own. Even though it might seem like the shortcut to Insta-success, don’t do it. Even if the company isn’t your direct competitor, it’s simply in bad taste and will only muddy the search results when people try to find your posts.

DO: Brainstorm With The Crew

If you’re having a hard time coming up with the perfect hashtag, brainstorm with your staff. If you’re a one-person mobile spray tan operation, then recruit the help of family and friends. Sometimes it takes more than one mind to come up with the perfect idea.

DON’T: Spam Your Followers

Once you’ve come up with the perfect hashtag, don’t overdo it. If you send your followers a million posts a day to try to push your new hashtag, there’s a chance that they’ll get annoyed and stop following you. You want your hashtag to gain momentum organically, not because you forced it on people.

DO: Encourage Your Followers To Use It

Definitely encourage your followers to use your new unique hashtag. Create incentives, such as being featured on your brand’s official page. The best way to get a hashtag to grow in popularity is by getting a lot of people to use it.

DON’T: Stay Married To A Hashtag If It Isn’t Working

Sometimes the hashtag you come up with doesn’t want to stick. If this happens, don’t be afraid to scrap the idea and brainstorm something new. When it comes to marketing your brand on Instagram, sometimes it takes multiple tries to get it perfect.
