Looking after your skin in your 20s, 30s & 40s

Aging should be a celebrated process, but the fear of wrinkles and dark spots make it hard for us to look forward to it as we grow older. You live with your skin for an entire lifetime, so it’s important to take the steps that will keep it healthy throughout every step of the way. Here are some examples of how to personalize your skincare routine to you and your skin’s age.

If You’re In Your 20s…
Your 20s are late nights and a carpe diem attitude that makes you feel invincible. In the excitement of our youth, however, we can forget that our skin is at risk to damage—even if it isn’t showing it yet. This is the time to start developing a daily skincare routine.

At this age, most people face acne or self-destructive habits like sun-tanning or sleeping in makeup.

To keep acne at bay, go for spot treatments or toners that are oil-free and contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Make sure to put on a moisturizer or sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from harmful UVA rays and if you’re still needing that sunkissed or super dark tan look, use self tan! Lastly, take the extra five minutes to wash makeup off your face, even if you’ve just stumbled home a little tipsy. Your face will thank you ten years from now!

If You’re in Your 30s…
As you reach your 30s, you may start to see fine lines and discoloration. At this stage, introduce night creams and moisturizers with anti-aging properties such as retinol to help improve skin’s texture. This is also the time to think about adding an eye cream, to keep this tender area supple.

Another underrated secret to great skin in your 30s is one that works for everyone: water. Staying hydrated is especially important as your skin begins to lose elasticity. In order to ensure your moisturizer is effective, drink at least eight cups a day.

If You’re in Your 40s…
In your 40s, you’ll probably be experiencing a drop in estrogen, will can cause dryer skin and extra wrinkles. Ingredients like hydroxyl acid and peptides can help rebuild collagen, which encourages smooth and ageless skin.

Continue to use heavy-duty moisturizers and take extra steps to avoid dehydration. This may be a good time to think about cutting down on caffeine and alcohol, which can dehydrate you without you noticing.
