The 411 On Salon Apprenticeships

Once you’ve graduated from beauty school, you might feel a little lost. A lot of the only places that will hire recent grads are discount chain salons, which offer little opportunity for upward growth. This is why many grads seek apprenticeships at salons and spas. An apprenticeship is essentially an internship, where you are brought on to further your education while simultaneously working for the establishment. To help you decide if this course is right for you, here’s the 411 on salon and spa apprenticeships.
How To Find Apprenticeships
Finding apprenticeships is easier than you might think; in fact, it’s similar to finding any other industry job. Look at industry websites and sites for job seekers. Your beauty school might also be able to help you to find an apprenticeship that fits in with your particular skill set and interests. During interviews, it’s important that you seem earnest and ready to learn, rather than cocky or set in your ways. Salons and spas are seeking apprentices who are competent, but who have an open mind and will adapt to the ways of the salon.
What To Expect
As an apprentice, a lot of your day will be spent learning. Luckily, unlike internships, the majority of apprenticeships are paid. The salary isn’t phenomenal, but a lot of the time, you’ll be making a decent wage to watch cuts and treatments. As in, you’re getting paid to learn. You will certainly have some responsibilities around the establishment, however. Many apprentices are responsible for “grunt work,” such as sweeping or occasional secretarial tasks. Many apprentices will also do beginner-type salon responsibilities, such as providing kids’ cuts or shampooing.
Benefits
An apprenticeship is not a guarantee of later employment at the salon or spa. However, it’s in the best interest of the owners to hire from their apprentice pool rather from new applicants. Therefore, if you impress the owner, you can essentially count on employment. Otherwise, an apprenticeship will bolster your resume when you go to apply at other salons. Salons and spas aren’t looking for green recent beauty school graduates. Instead, they want great employees who have experience.
An apprenticeship is a great opportunity for recent beauty school grads. Once you complete your apprenticeship, you will truly be ready to work as a stylist or therapist, with a wealth of education and experience under your belt.
