My Spray Tan Is Not Dark Enough
When you pay for a professional spray tan, ending up with a color that falls short of your expectations is always a letdown. Because tanning solutions are developed in a wide range of shades to fit all skin tones, it’s not uncommon to walk out of the salon wishing you went a few shades darker. Fortunately, adding color into your skin is a lot easier than taking it out if your tan ended up too dark! Below are a few reasons why your spray tan may not have developed to its full potential just yet, and some tips on how to boost your color without heading back to the salon.
Why Did My Spray Tan Come Out Too Light?
1. Your tanning solution had a low DHA content
Dihydroxyacetone, better known as DHA, is the most commonly used color chemical in tanning solutions. The darkness of a spray tan is determined by the amount of DHA the tanning mist contains, as well as other factors including the color base. For example, MineTan’s best-selling Pro Spray Mist solutions all use a variety of different levels of DHA as well as different bases and ingredients that all effect the depth and darkness of a tan.
MineTan’s Absolute range is designed for those who love a super dark, deep tan with the range of Ultra Dark tanning products available in self tan foams and pro spray mists. Not only is the DHA in these products quite high, but each of the Absolute products include quad bronzing melanin activating intensifiers are combined with naturally derived tan actives to produce a darker, faster tan by activating skin cells to boost color. The unprecedented power of blended quad bronzers provides rapid unparalleled bronzing results for a super dark tan.
2. Your shower products have a high pH level
Soaps, shower moisturisers and body washes with high pH levels work against sunless tanners by neutralising DHA. If you’re a regular tanner, we recommend investing in some products with a more neutral pH balance or purchasing primers designed to restore your skins pH balance which can be used before tanning. If you’re just tanning as a once-off, we suggest just avoiding the products in the 24 hours prior to tanning.
3. You skipped your pre-application skin prep
How well you prepare your skin for your spray tan can make a dramatic difference to the quality and depth of your results. Since tanning solutions work by depositing tanning agents into the top layers of the skin, you need to remove dead skin cells and debris before the application to get a deep and even coverage. To get the most out of every spray tan, polish your skin with an exfoliating cleanser the day before your session. Check out our tips for self tan before & after care for the perfect, dark tan!
4. You did not rinse correctly
Similar to ensuring your skin is well-prepped, you also must pay attention to how you treat your skin directly after the tan application. While cool or lukewarm showers are recommended for washing off bronzer residue a couple of hours after application, taking a hot shower can totally strip your color. Additionally, you should only be showering for approximately 45 seconds with no soaps, gels or lotions for your initial rinse (after this one, you can go back to showering and bathing as normal, keeping in mind your tan will slightly fade with each clean). If a dark tan is what you’re looking for, we do recommend waiting a few hours before rinsing it off so that the product has longer to develop with your skin. Note: after rinsing, your skin will continue to deepen over the next 24 hours, so if your skin does not seem that dark, give it time!
How Can I Deepen My Fake Tan at Home?
Re-apply with an at-home self tan product
As with MineTan’s Pro Spray Mists, you can also select a product from a huge range of self tan foams for at-home tanning so you can top up your color even more. Check out our best tips for nailing your at-home self tan!
Gradual tan moisturisers are some of the best after-care products out there as they elongate your tan by topping up color slightly with every application as well as keeping your skin moisturised and hydrating, which is key to a long-lasting, deep tan. This is a great way to top up your skin for a darker tan.
